Oh so many years ago, I knew the basics of piano music. I can still read it - kinda. But I have long forgotten all the technical terms and symbols. Enter the computer. Over Thanksgiving, I was introduced to this dandy piece of software called Noteworthy Composer. (http://www.noteworthysoftware.com/) You input the notes and it plays back. Nifty! Let's write something, but where do I start? Start with something familiar...

Growing up in a house filled with clocks, I wondered if I could duplicate the music from the cuckoo. It plays two different tunes: Edelweiss and, uh, some other song. With a little help from some expert musicians, I managed to end up with this.

Clocks

Hmmm...I'm pretty proud of myself. I asked Santa to bring me software for Christmas. I guess I was a good girl, and my wish was granted.

I am learning, or rather re-learning, the technical side of music. I am replaying songs that I used to enjoy and realizing what makes something fun to play and hear. Some day I may have enough to compile a CD and rocket myself to fame. So with much fanfare and without further ado, I present to you the following 10 minutes. Bon appetito!

1400 km (800 miles) of driving and just as much walking found us at the end of our two weeks in Ireland. And what a lovely time it was. Campers are caravans, elevators are lifts, and four-thirty is half four, but things were more the same than they were different. When a gallery becomes available, I'll be sure to let you know. Until then, enjoy a few slides and the tale of "The Bus Ride".

The Bus Ride

After a late dinner in the Temple Bar district, we decided to take a bus back to the hotel. We had successfully done this a couple of days earlier. No biggie, let's go! A bus pulls up to the post. It is on the #7 route, the same one we took before.

"Does this bus go to Merrion Square?" Steve wants to confirm with the bus driver.

"Yes," came the reply from behind the plastic partition.

We pay with coins, as the busses do not accept any bills. We settle into our seats and feel proud that we have learned the local system.

We leave O'Connell Street and stop by Trinity College. Ours should be next. Do we push the stop button or not? Nah, they probably stop everywhere anyway. The bus rolls by our hotel. Rest is in sight. We see Merrion Square, but the bus does not stop. Maybe it stops on the other side of the square.

But the bus keeps going.

We stare at each other. The bus will probably turn around soon. The actual stop must be on the opposite side of the street.

But the bus keeps going.

Steve goes back to the nameless driver, "Does this bus stop at Merrion Square?"

"Yes," came the reply.

And the bus keeps going.

We enter suburbia Dublin.

And the bus keeps going.

Now we've got a problem. Steve's pints of beer are catching up to him. His eyes look worried. He has to hold off thoughts of streams and waterfalls.

And the bus keeps going.

After 45 minutes, we reach the end of the line. We are the only two people on the bus.

"You have to get off here," says the driver.

Huh? Wha?

"This is the end of the line. Another bus will be by shortly. It goes the other direction."

"Were do we catch that bus?" Steve asks, obviously confused and concerned.

"Other side of the street. It'll be by in about 10 minutes," says the only person around with any knowledge of where we are.

With much trepidation, we exit the bus and cross the 4-lane road. It's 11:30 pm. What choice do we have? As any guy would in his condition, Steve finds a tall bush several feet away from the road. When he emerges, his eyes are once again clear.

We watch across the road as our former bus sits there at the end of its route. The bus driver is checking the seats for anything left behind by careless riders. We wait. Where is that other bus? Where is it coming from? There's nothing here! From across the street comes the roar of an engine. The bus is moving. The driver makes a U-turn and then stops in front of us. The doors open.

"Does this bus go to Merrion Square?" Steve incredulously asks the driver.

"It comes close," came the reply from behind the plastic partition.

We're out of the proper coins. The driver feels sorry for us and has probably had the biggest laugh of his week. Either way, he clocks us in for a lesser price ticket and we retake our seats. The same seats on the same bus.

And the bus starts going.
For the past seven or eight years, we have been fortunate enough to have one or more barn swallow families take up residence on our porch. They return around this same time each year, fortify the existing nests (we haven't the heart to knock them down), and settle in. Four or five babies will hatch in a couple of weeks. It's amazing to watch as the new barn swallows enter the wide world. And now you can watch and listen along with us! The bird cam is up and focused on the back porch nest.

Long poles are kept warm by the furnace. They are heated in the Glory Hole before dipping into the molten glass. Yes, the Glory Hole. I could not make up something like that. The Glory Hole maintains a heat of 2400 degrees. The red hot glowing pole goes from here into the liquid glass. This cauldron is "only" 2200 degrees. The glass gathers on the end of the pole much like molasses on a stick.

It is then rolled along a steel table to shape it into a tube. This initial step is designed to extend the pole with the glass so the paperweight can easily be removed. Another dip into the molten glass and it's time to start adding artistic touches. Bubbles are created by using an ice pick of sorts to poke holes. Colors can be added by rolling the ball through some crystallized dyes. Back into the Glory Hole for a quick heating before another dip in the lava. The liquid glass will not stick to anything cooler than itself, so the Glory Hole is used to bring up the temperature. Shaping is done with an ash wood cup. This type of wood is very hard and does not burn as easily as other woods, although we did get it smokin'. The Glory Hole is used to heat the piece as continual refinements are made. A pair of tongs called jacks score the paperweight at the base. A knife and a little elbow grease remove the paperweight from the pole before placing it in the kiln. Here it must sit and slowly cool. After several days, Art is born.

Our instructor was very calm, patient and talented. Young, but maybe that means I'm getting old. Steve and I both created three individual pieces and one collaboration. Yes, it was extremely hot by the furnaces. Yes, I was a little clumsy and let the glass touch the side wall of the Glory Hole. (At which point I was descended upon by four people who removed me from the situation as they swiftly got it under control.) Yes, it makes me appreciate even more the time and hard work it takes to develop a talent. And Yes, I would do it again. It was a wonderful experience.
A service call from the local Refrigerator Rob said it would cost more to repair it than it was worth. Figures. Visits to Sears, Home Depot and Best Buy land us a new LG icebox. No, we did not get the one with the television in the door. But we did get a beauty. Get this ... it actually freezes the ice cream. And it's got ice and water in the door! And, and it keeps veggies fresh for more than two days. And, and, AND it came with a humor magazine (sometimes known as the owners manual).

Another entry from "Eye Drops". And one that should not be missed. We have both DVDs and share them with anyone who will sit down to watch. People like them for different reasons. My nephews think the robots are "totally cool". Some appreciate the work behind the scenes. Some like the music. I like the whole package. Buy a copy or two or three. "Pipe Dream" is probably their most famous animation.
